Do You Need a Wedding Hashtag?

First, what’s the point of a wedding hashtag? Do you actually need one?

Wedding hashtags are a fairly new concept, made popular thanks to the rise of social media. The purpose of creating a wedding hashtag is to encourage your loved ones to use it when posting any happy snaps from your wedding on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter. Your wedding hashtag can also be used for your pre or post-wedding events (such as your bachelorette party and bridal shower) to document your entire wedding journey!

While you definitely don’t “need” a wedding hashtag, it can be a nice way to keep track of all of your guest’s wedding photos together in one central place. It also means you can easily revisit them over and over again after the big day.

How to Come Up With a Unique Wedding Hashtag

So, where should you begin with creating a unique hashtag for your wedding?

Your wedding hashtag should be something specific to you, your partner and your wedding day. With this in mind, make a list of the following details as a starting point:

Once you’ve jotted down these essential details, it’s time to get creative! Can you see any opportunities to use alliteration, rhymes or clever puns?

You might want to make a list of words that sound similar to your names, and try to incorporate them somehow. For example – if your marital name will be “Holton”, you could use the hashtag “ToHaveAndToHolton”.

Wedding hashtags don’t always have to be super fun and witty, though. You can definitely keep it simple!

How to Share Your Wedding Hashtag with Guests

Once you’ve decided on a wedding hashtag, you’ll also need to share it with your guests.

The best way to do this is by including your wedding hashtag on your wedding website, and encouraging your loved ones to use it for their social media posts. You can say something like:

“We would love to see your photos! Please use our hashtag #WhenHarryWedSally for all of your happy snaps from the day”

It’s also a good idea to have your wedding hashtag displayed as a visual reminder on the day. You might want to include your wedding hashtag on your entrance sign, bar menu, or even create a custom neon sign to hang above your bridal table or photo backdrop!
