Kelly and David’s Wedding at Lott Hall

Love was in the air as Kelly and David celebrated their special day surrounded by friends and family at the enchanting Lott Hall.

This outdoor venue perfectly captured the essence of their vision—a slightly fancier backyard BBQ with a touch of Texas charm.

The vibrant colors of Texas bluebonnets inspired the wedding’s color palette. Shades of rich blue and soft lavender were interwoven with pops of bright yellow and hints of green, creating a visually striking and harmonious atmosphere.

Where did you get married?

Lott Hall in Houston, Texas

Why did you choose to get married at Lott Hall?

We wanted our wedding to feel like a slightly fancier backyard BBQ, so an outdoor venue was a must. There aren’t a lot of outdoor venues in the central part of Houston where we live, and Lott Hall is in Hermann Park – one of our favorite parks in Houston – so it was kind of a no brainer!

What was the most memorable part of your wedding day?

So hard to choose, but I think the whole dancing portion of the evening is the thing I’ll be reliving over and over. I really had this vision of everyone dancing on the grass under twinkle lights and that’s what happened – it was so magical!

Plus seeing all of our friends and family from the different parts of our lives have an absolute blast all dancing together was so fun. We had some guests tell us it was the best dance party of any wedding they’d been to. Mission accomplished!

Kelly, paint us a picture. What was the theme, style, colors, and overall vibe of your wedding day?

Texas bluebonnets, the state flower, were sort of my inspiration for the colors of the wedding, and Texas was definitely woven into the theme of the whole -weekend since so many of our friends and family were traveling from out of town and we wanted to give them a taste of our home. Unfortunately, since bluebonnets are wildflowers they don’t make great cut flowers, but the blues and greens still came through in the florals and decor we had at the event, and on our website!

We really wanted the whole event to feel fun and casual, but still beautiful. I ended up renting silk florals from Something Borrowed Blooms because finding more environmentally friendly options for our wedding was important to us – not to mention they’re more budget friendly, allowing us to use more of our budget toward things that would add more to the guest experience like food and drink! The silk flowers were still beautiful and the blues and greens really popped at our venue in the park that was also so lush and green with lots of flowers in bloom as well.

As for the food – we went with dinner stations where guests could get tacos, barbecue, or Frito pies, a true Texas selection. Again trying to keep things casual, we didn’t have a seating arrangement, so after getting food our guests were free to sit wherever they wanted and I think this really helped folks mix and mingle among our different friend and family groups.

And then I already mentioned the grass-and-twinkle-light dance party, which was definitely a major part of the “vibe” we were going for. We got so lucky and the weather was incredible that day, so being outdoors for the ceremony, cocktail hour, and dancing in the Texas sun and then under the Texas stars was the perfect cherry on top of the whole event.

What was your favorite part of planning your wedding?

Making the playlists was probably my favorite part (if you haven’t noticed I really like the dance party part!). I really found all of the planning to be fun, but picking the music for the various parts of the day (pre-ceremony, processional, cocktail hour & dinner, dancing) and crafting those playlists was the one part where we really had total creative freedom with no worries about budget or other constraints. We could pick songs that we love as a couple, and that we knew our friends and family would really enjoy. To me music is always such a big part of setting the mood of any party so it was just really fun to figure out how to make our personalities and the vibe we were going for come through in the music. It also definitely helped that we had an awesome DJ from our favorite local neighborhood bar who was willing to track down any and every song on our list – shout out DJ Mark!!!

What was the best investment you made for your wedding?

I think my answer to this is something that we didn’t invest a whole lot of our budget in – florals and decor. I love fresh flowers and love a beautiful decorated event, but at the end of the day I didn’t really care if our guests remembered how nice our flowers were, I wanted them to remember how much fun they had celebrating with us. While florals and decor can contribute to that, I think finding ways to limit that part of our budget so we could spend more on delicious food, great drinks, and a beautiful venue that really fit our vision was 1000% worth it. The one part of our decor that was a little bit of a splurge but also SO worth it: the twinkle lights (which I’ve already talked about enough).

Is there anything you would have done differently?

I really can’t think of anything! The only disappointing part of the day was how quickly it flew by – I wish I could’ve had a remote to pause everything and soak in every moment just a little bit longer!

What was your favorite part of using WedSites for your wedding?

Getting to truly customize every page just as I wanted it, including uploading my own artwork so I could really make it feel like our own!

Wedding planning is notoriously stressful. Now that you’ve gone through the process, do you have any advice or words of wisdom for couples who are currently in the midst of planning theirs?

Kelly and David’s custom designed wedding website

I think the main thing I stressed about was just really wanting to plan a wedding that all of our guests would enjoy – from our grandparents to our crazy college friends. But when the day arrived and we were in the middle of everything you kind of realize that the people at your wedding are there for reason – these are your people and they’re gonna love just being included in the celebrations, no matter how you planned it. What matters the most is just having all of those people together and then everything else – the food, the music, the decor – is just an added bonus on top of that.

(Note for the next question re: photos – we’ve only gotten our preview photos from our photographer so far, expecting to get the whole batch in the next couple weeks!)
